Over 20 years ago, I took a course on making home-made chocolates. The entire family loved the finished chocolates that I brought home, so we started making them for Christmas, and Easter, and whenever we wanted some. My oldest daughter Coralea loved using the different colored chocolates to “paint” faces on the chocolates. So when Coralea decided to get married four years ago, it was just plain logic to make home-made chocolates for wedding favors.
We got rave reviews! Being only part-time employed at the time, I decided to keep on making chocolates and took them to local Christmas craft fairs that fall. They sold really well, it was something I loved to do, and I had the time, so I bought a table-top tempering machine and kept on making chocolates out of my own kitchen.
People always ask me about the name of my company. When I was deciding on the name, I had read about chocolate and the effect it has on the brain. When chocolate is eaten, a chemical called serotonin is released by the brain. Serotonin is the “happy” chemical that makes us feel good, and it is also present when we fall in love. The association was a good one, thus Serotonin Chocolates was born.
The next fall, I sent some samples to a couple of companies, and got orders for 250 one pound boxes. From there, it seemed to take off. I sold chocolates more by word of mouth than any other way. In autumn 2006, I quit both of my jobs and dove into making chocolates. It’s a job I love, and also makes my days flexible enough to be involved in our cow/calf operation on the farm which makes me happy, because cattle are my first love.
